Linus Pauling, an American chemist, took the physicists’ new quantum theory and applied it to chemistry, extending the work that Lewis had done earlier on the chemical bond. In the 1930s, he started working in the new molecular biology, attempting to determine the nature and structure of proteins, which are some of the most important chemical constituents of living organisms.
