Geç Osmanlı dönemi tarihi alanında dünyanın en önde gelen otoritelerindendir ve 19. yüzyıl entelektüel tarihinin en önemli kaynakları olan yapıt ve makalelerin de sahibidir[1] Çalışmaları, 2010 TÜBİTAK Özel Ödülü ve 2012 T.C. Cumhurbaşkanlığı Kültür ve Sanat Büyük Ödülü ile ödüllendirilmiştir.
Yaşamı
Yüksek öğrenimini İstanbul Üniversitesi’nde siyaset bilimi ve ekonomi alanında tamamladıktan sonra aynı üniversitede siyaset bilimi doktoru oldu. Doktora tezini İttihad ve Terakki Cemiyeti kurucu üyelerinden Abdullah Cevdet Bey üzerine yazdı. 1981’den itibarn İttihad ve Terakki Cemiyeti hakkındaki araştırmaları için birçok ülkede ve arşivde çalışmalar yaptı.[2]
Son dönem Osmanlı politika ve diplomasi tarihi ile Türk siyaset hayatı konularında İstanbul Üniversitesi, Boğaziçi Üniversitesi, Deniz Harp Okulu ve Columbia, Wisconsin, Michigan ve Chicago Üniversitesi’nde ders verdi; seminerler yönetti. Ahmet Ertegün Vakfı başkanlığı, Princeton Üniversitesi'nin yakındoğu çalışmaları bölümü başkanlığı görevlerinde bulundu.
"Son dönem Osmanlı, erken dönem Türk entelektüel, diplomatik ve siyasal tarihine farklı bir bakış açısıyla yaklaşan uluslararası düzeyde üstün nitelikli çalışmaları” nedeniyle 2010 yılında TÜBİTAK Özel Ödülü’ne layık görüldü[3] ve TÜBİTAK tarafından ödüllendirilen ilk tarihçi oldu.[4] Hanioğlu, 2012 yılında ise Cumhurbaşkanlığı Kültür ve Sanat Büyük Ödülü’ne[5] layık görülmüştür.
2010 yılından bu yana Sabah gazetesinde köşe yazıları yayımlamaktadır.[6]
