Herman Northrop Frye; 14 Temmuz 1912'de Kanada'da Quebec eyaletinin Sherbrooke şehrinde doğdu. Moncton kasabasında büyüyen Frye, ilk olarak 1929 yılında Kanada çapında düzenlenen bir yarışma için geldiği Toronto'da Victoria College'a kaydoldu ve Oxford'daki Merton College'da aldığı iki yıllık eğitim hariç, hayatı boyunca Toronto Üniversitesi bünyesinde faaliyet gösteren bu okulda kaldı. Burada 1939 yılından itibaren İngiliz edebiyatı profesörü olarak çalıştı. 1978 yılında ise aynı kurumun rektörü oldu. 1974-75 yılında Harvard Üniversitesi tarafından kendisine Charles Eliot Norton Profesörü unvanı verildi. 23 Ocak 1991 tarihinde Toronto'da vefat etti
