1962'de Inverness, İskoçya'da bir işçi ailesinin çocuğu olarak dünyaya geldi. Cambridge'de başladığı felsefe doktorasını yarım bıraktı. 2004'te bir dergiye verdiği röportajda bir yıl boyunca çektiği kronik yorgunluk sendromunun onu öğretim üyeliği görevinden ayrılmaya nasıl zorladığından ve asıl yapmak istediği işe; yazmaya nasıl yoğunlaştırdığından söz eder. Yazarın Everest Yayınları'nca yayımlanan kitapları arasında, Whitbread Ödülü'nü kazanan Rastlantısal (2007), Bütün Hikâye ve Diğerleri (2010), Gibi (2011) bulunmaktadır. Yazar halen Cambridge'de yaşamaktadır.
