The book is an interesting account of the city's history and its importance in post-WWI politics and activities; example: "Since the taking of Constantinople by the Allies, it has been the quietest and safest place in the Near East; and refugees have therefore continued to seek asylum here." The photos from 90 years ago show this civilization on the brink of the modern age, including both high-rise buildings and whirling dervishes.
