K alı bilim kurgu kitapları yazarı. Romanlarıyla ünlü olmasına rağmen, kısa öyküler de yazdı. Gazeteci, fotoğrafçı, kitap eleştirmeni, ekolojik danışman ve öğretim görevlisi olarak çalıştı. Pratik Bilgiler Doğum, Ölüm ... Herbert, Tacoma Washington'da 8 Ekim 1920'de dünyaya geldi. Küçüklüğünden beri yazar olmak istedi. 1938'de üniversiteden mezun oldu ve 1939'da Glendale Star adlı gazetede yazarlık kariyerine başladı. II. Dünya Savaşı sırasında yazarlığa altı ay kadar ara verdi ve Amerikan Donanması'nda fotoğrafçı olarak çalıştı, ancak bu görevden sağlık sebepleri ile ayrılmak zorunda kaldı. Herbert'in ilk bilim kurgu öyküsü Looking for Something, aylık olarak Samuel Mines tarafından düzenlenen bir dergi olan Startling Stories'in, Nisan 1952 sayısında yayınlandı. Frank Herbert'in roman yazarlığı kariyeri 1955'te yazdığı "Denizdeki Ejderha" (The Dragon in The Sea) ile başladı. Dünya çapında Dune adlı ünlü bilim kurgu serisi ile tanındı. Tarihte verilen ilk Nebula Ödülü’nü kazanan yazarın Dune ile kazandığı bir de Hugo Ödülü bulunmaktadır. Roman, tüm zamanların en çok satan bilim kurgu romanı unvanını almıştır.
