Kasım 1997’de senarist-karikatürcü olarak ilk yayını Creative Zone tarafından yayınlanan kolektif bir “BD-Clip” te yayınlandı. 4 sayfa yaratıyor. 1999'da Nucléa'da yazar ve koleksiyon direktörlüğü yaptı. Bu sırada Eric Lambert'in çizdiği "Merlin" i ve DIM-D ile birlikte "Aleph" i yarattı. "Merlin" dizisini aldığı Sun sürümleri için çalışmaya karar verdi ve sonra Dim-D'yi çizen "Gölge Lordu" yazdı. En novembre 1997, sa première publication en tant que scénariste-dessinateur se fait au sein d’un collectif « BD-Clip » édité par Zone créative. Il crée alors 4 pages. En 1999, il s’implique en tant qu’auteur et directeur de collection chez Nucléa. C’est à cette époque qu’il crée "Merlin" dessiné par Eric Lambert et "Aleph" avec DIM-D. Il décide de travailler ensuite pour les éditions Soleil où il reprend la série "Merlin", et écrit alors "Le Seigneur D’ombre" que dessine Dim-D. Jean-Luc Istin dessine également « Les Brumes d'Asceltis » sur un scénario de Nicolas Jarry. De son intérêt et de son attachement pour la Bretagne, il a l’idée de créer un collectif de contes bretons qu’il baptise "Les Contes du Korrigan". Pour cela il fait appel à son ami Erwan Lebreton qui prend en charge le scénario. Suite au succès de cette série, Jean-Luc Istin va imaginer une collection Soleil Celtic qu’il propose à Mourad Boudjellal. Ce dernier accepte et c’est le début d’une aventure qui regroupe aujourd’hui pas moins de 17 titres. Dans cette collection, il est également parfois auteur comme pour "Le Sang du Dragon", "Les Contes de l'Ankou", "Les Druides", "Le Grimoire de Féérie", "Merlin, la Quête de l'Épée".
