Amitav Ghosh, 11 Temmuz 1956'da Kalküta'da doğdu ve Dehradun'daki tüm erkek yatılı okul The Doon School'da eğitim gördü. Hindistan, Bangladeş ve Sri Lanka'da büyüdü. Doon'daki çağdaşları arasında yazar Vikram Seth ve tarihçi Ram Guha vardı. Okuldayken, okul dergisine düzenli olarak kurgu ve şiir yazdı ve Guha ile birlikte History Times dergisini kurdu. Doon'dan sonra St. Stephen Koleji, Delhi Üniversitesi ve Delhi Ekonomi Okulu'ndan dereceler aldı.
