1940'ta Eastbourne'da doğdu. İlk romanı Shadow Dance'ı 1966'da yayımlar yayımlamaz Britanya'nın en özgün yazarları arasında görülmeye başladı. Ondan sonra The Magic Toyshop (1967) ile John Llewellyn Rhys Ödülü'nü, Several Perceptions (1968) ile Somerset Maugharn Ödülü'nü kazandı. Daha sonra başka romanları (Herves and Villams, 1969; Love, 1971; The Infermal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman, 1972; The Passion of New Eve, 1977; Nights at the Circus, 1984, James Tait Black Anı Ödülü) ile üç kısa öykü derlemesi (The Bloody Chamber, 1979, Cheltenham Edebiyat Festivali Ödülü; Fireworks: Nine Profane Pieces, 1984 ve Saints and Strangers, 1985) yayımlandı. 1976'dan 1978'e kadar Sheffield University'de yaratıcı yazma, 1981'de Brown University'de yazma konulu dersler verdi.
