1959’da ABD’de, Oklahoma’da doğan Lane Smith, Pasadena’daki Sanat Merkezi Tasarım Okulu’nda illüstrasyon eğitimi aldı. Çalışmaları New York Times Magazine, The Boston Globe, Newsweek gibi dünyaca ünlü yayınların kapaklarında yer aldı. Yazıp resimlediği The Big Pets and The Happy Hocky Family (Büyük Evcil Hayvanlar ve Mutlu Hocky Ailesi) kitabının yanı sıra Jon Scieszka’yla birlikte pek çok proje gerçekleştirdi. Scieszka’nın The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (Üç Küçük Domuzun Gerçek Öyküsü), Squids will be Squids (Kalamar Kalamardır) ile 1993 Caldcott Onur Kitabı olarak seçilen The Stinky Cheese Man (Kokuşmuş Peynir Adam) adlı kitaplarını resimledi. Sanatçı, Bratislava Altın Elma, The Silver Buckeye ve İllüstratörler Topluluğu Gümüş Madalyası sahibi.
