Little Fires Everywhere

Celeste Ng
In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned - from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren - an enigmatic artist and single mother - who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community. When the Richardsons' friends attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town--and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs. < Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, and the ferocious pull of motherhood - and the danger of believing that following the rules can avert disaster.

This may contain spoilers This is one of the most hyped up books on social media lately however, I don't think it lives up to the expectations. There are many moments in this book where you could find yourself asking whether you should stop reading it. I suppose many stuck to it because we wanted to find out how did the characthers come to this point. Let me tell you this; it does not deliver. One of the most disturbing points in this book was the exaggeration to the limit. If it was hyperbole, it would have been for to criticize social events however author simply used it for dramatic effect which worked poorly on her behalf. For example; one of the characters had 7 miscarriages in several years which does not seem very plausible and lessens the credibility of the story. Other point that was not very delightful was the language of the book. I actually like books with more accessible language however author's use of language could be defined as struggling at best. Talking about most crucial social issues requires a better language I belive. In the most essential moments where it could have been very impactful and powerful, it was weak and underwhelming to say the least. Moving on to the point(s) I liked about this book, several of the issues it talked about is very crucial in recent days such as abortion, racism, feminism. I could say that the book takes a fresh point of view on the matters in question and makes you empathise with the characters. Makes you question what you would have done. Lastly it was really hard to bond with the most of the characters because they weren't really remarkable. Only characters you may remember after a year are Mia and Izzie.

Tavsiye ederim..."
