He was born on February 10, 1944 in Pasinler, Erzurum. He graduated from high school in Izmir. He left his education at Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Turkish Language and Literature. He started his journalism career in Yeni İstanbul newspaper in 1967, and retired in 1992 after working in Cumhuriyet newspaper for twenty years.
