Onun çocukluk hayâli büyüyüp balerin olmaktı; 3 yaşındayken derslere başladı ve 8 yaşında Amerika Bale Okulu'na seçildi, ama reddetti. Bir gençken, lise eğitimi için Manhattan'a taşındı. Von Ziegesar, mezun olunca Colby Koleji'ne gitti. Ardından 1 yıl Budapeşte'de yerel radyo merkezinde çalıştı. Ardından Arizona Üniversitesi'ndeki yazı çalışmaları için Amerika'ya geri döndü.
