Charles Dickens (7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English writer. Born in 1812 as the son of a civil servant father, Dickens' early years were prosperous, but he met misery when his father was imprisoned for his debts. He had to work in a paint factory when he was only 11 years old. Young Dickens, who joined a lawyer at the age of 15, learned shorthand in his spare time because he was curious about learning.
