Greg Rucka 29 Kasım 1969'da San Francisco'da dünyaya geldi ve Kaliforniya'nın Monterey Yarımadasında yerel halka " Steinbeck Ülkesi " olarak bilinen bir alanda büyüdü. İlk olarak beş yaşındayken, Stan Lee'nin ve Jack Kirby'nin The Incredible Hulk'taki eserinin cep boyutunda siyah-beyaz tekrar baskılarını gördüğü Kaliforniya , Salinas'daki Nob Hill Market'te çizgi romanı keşfetti; annesini satın almaya ikna etti . Genç yaşta yazmaya başladı ve 10 yaşındayken il genelinde kısa öykü yarışması kazandı. Vassar College'dan İngilizce olarak AB derecesi aldı. Daha sonra Güzel Sanatlar Yüksek Lisansı ile mezun olan Güney Kaliforniya Profesyonel Yazı Programı Master programına kaydoldu. Douglas Adams'ı en büyük etkisi olarak adlandırıyor. Profesyonel bir kurgu yazarına geçmeden önce, ev boyama, restoran çalışması, acil tıbbi teknisyen , güvenlik görevlisi , teknik yazar ve muharebe koreografı da dahil olmak üzere bir dizi başka meslekte çalıştı.
