Norton 10 Aralık 1903 yılında bir fizikçinin kızı olarak doğmuş ve Leighton Buzzard' daki High Street'in sonundaki Gürcü evinde büyümüştür. Söz konusu ev şu anda Eski Ev olarak bilinen, yazarın Aşırıcılar romanının altyapısını oluşturan evdir ve şu anda Leighton ortaokulunun bir kısmını oluşturmaktadır. Robert Charles Norton ile 4 Eylül 1946 yılında evlenmiş ve iki kız ve iki erkek olmak üzere dört çocuk sahibi olmuştur. İkinci eşi Lionel Boncey ile 1970 yılında evlenmiştir. Ailesi geçici olarak ABD' ye taşınmadan önce 1940 yılında savaş bürosunda çalışmaya başlamıştır. Yazarlığa II. Dünya Savaşı sırasında New York'taki British Purchasing Commission ofisinde çalışırken başlamıştır. İlk kitabı The Magic Bed Knob; or, How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons 1943 yılında yayınlanmıştır. Bu kitapla beraber yayınlanan Bonfires and Broomsticks eseri daha sonra Disney'in Bedknobs and Broomsticks filminin temelini oluşturmuştur. Mary Norton 29 Ağustos 1992'de Bideford, Devon, İngiltere'de kalp krizi sonucu hayata veda etmiştir.
