The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy is an 1860 work on the Italian Renaissance by Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt. Together with his History of the Renaissance in Italy it is counted among the classics of Renaissance historiography.
“Burkhardt sought to capture and define the spirit of the age in all its main manifestations. For him ‘’Kultur’’ was the whole picture: politics, manners, religion...the character that animated the particular activities of a people in a given epoch, and of which pictures, buildings, social and political habits, literature, are the concrete expressions. Its scholarly judgements are considered to have been largely justified by subsequent research according to historians including Desmond Seward and art historians such as Kenneth Clark.” (Denys Hay)

Bir Protestan ruhbanın oğlu olan Burckhardt, Basel ve Neuchâtel'de 1839'a kadar teoloji eğitimi aldı. Daha sonra Berlin Üniversitesi'nde tarih, özellikle sanat tarihi eğitimine başladı. Berlin'de tarihi saygıdeğer bir akademik disiplin haline getiren Leopold von Ranke'nin derslerine katıldı. 1841 yılının bir kısmını Bonn Üniversitesi'nde ilk kitabı Die Kuntswerke der Belgischen Städte'yi (1842) de adadığı sanat tarihçisi Franz Kugler'in yanında geçirdi. Basel Üniversitesi'nde ve daha sonra Zürih Mühendislik Okulu ETH'de 1843-55 arasında dersler verdi. 1858'de Basel'e dönüp 1893'deki emekliliğine kadar profesörlük görevini yürüttü. Sadece 1886'dan sonra özel olarak sanat tarihi dersleri verdi. İki kez Alman üniversitelerindeki profesörlük kürsüsü tekliflerini (Tübingen Üniversitesi - 1867 ve Berlin Üniversitesi Ranke kürsüsü - 1872) reddetti.
