Elizabeth Çağı İngiltere’sinin en önemli sanat ve devlet adamlarından biri olan Philip Sidney, 30 Kasım 1554’te, ailesinin Penshurst, Kent’teki malikanesinde doğdu. Gençliğinden itibaren zekâsı ve becerisiyle saray çevrelerinde kabul gördü. Protestanlığın sıkı bir savunucusu olan Sidney, Kraliçe Elizabeth’e diplomatik, idari ve askeri hizmetlerde bulundu. Bir yandan da şiirler kaleme alan Sidney, Leicester Earlü olan amcasının yanında katıldığı bir mezhep savaşında yaralandı ve birkaç hafta sonra, 17 Ekim 1586’da öldü. Şiirleri yıllar sonra yayımlandığında, Elizabeth Çağının edebiyatının en büyük sanatçılarından biri olarak övgüyle karşılandı ve bugün de İngiliz edebiyatının kurucu isimlerinden biri olarak kabul görmektedir.
