İlk şiirlerini 1947,ilk romanını ise 1948 yılında yayımlattı. Türkçeye çevrilen iki eserinden birisi olan Kumların Kadını adlı romanı ile uluslararası ün kazandı. Bu romanı Japonya'nın saygın edebiyat ödüllerinden Yomiuru Ödülü'nü, romanın uyarlandığı sinema filmi Cannes Film Festivali'nde Jüri Özel Ödülü'nü aldı. Ayrıca üç romanı daha sinemaya uyarlandı. On dört romanı, sekiz öykü denemesi, on yedi oyunu ve bir şiir derlemesi vardır. Modern toplumdaki bireyin bunalımını konu edinen yazarın eserleri Beckett, Kafka ve Sartre ile kıyaslanmıştır.
