A. C. Grayling 3 Nisan 1949 yılında günümüzdeki ismi olan Zambiya'da dünyaya geldi. Burada çocukluğunu geçirdi. 1991 yılında beri öğretmenlik yaptığı Londra Üniversitesinde Felsefe Profesörü oldu.
Grayling felsefe, biyografi, insan hakları gibi konularda bir çok kitap kaleme aldı. Çocukluk yıllarında Felsefeye merak saldı. Yakınları desteklemese de bilim adamı olmak istedi ve felsefe alanında profesör unvanını aldı.
A. C. Grayling 3 kız kardeşi ve bir erkek kardeşi vardır. Kız kardeşi yazar 19 yaşındayken öldürüldü. Beyin hasarı ile doğan ablasının ameliyat edilmesinden sonra duygusal noksanlıktan kaynaklı kişilik sorunları oluştu. Erken yaşta bir evlilik yaptı.
Evlendikten kısa süre sonra ise bir nehirde bıçaklanmış şekilde cansız bedeni bulundu. Yazarın bu kötü günler için açıklaması ise işkence gibi bir dönemdi dediği bilinmektedir.
Grayling 2011 yılında Birkbeck'teki görevinden istifa ederek Londra'da bağımsız bir lisans akademisi olan Yeni Beşeri Bilimler Kolejinin kurucusu oldu. 2003 yılında Man Booker ödülüne layık görüldü. Felsefe alanında bir çok esere imza atmış uluslararası yayınlarda bir çok makalesi yayınlanmıştır.
