Harvard Üniversitesi'nde kız öğrencilerin gittiği Radcliffe College'da ve Baltimore'daki Johns Hopkins Tıp Okulu'nda öğrenim gördü. 1903 yılında Amerika'yı terkedip Paris'te yaşamaya başladı.Roman, eleştiri, şiir, oyun vb. türünde çeşitli yapıtları veren Gertrude Stein 1946 yılında Paris'te öldü.
