16 Ekim 1854 yılında doğdu, Ünlü cerrah William Wilde'ın oğludur. Dublin'de Trinity College'ta okudu, 1874'te Oxford'a girdi. 1881 yılında Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'ne gitti orada estetik üzerine bir dizi konferans verdi. İlk tiyatro oyunu Vera New York'ta sergilendi. Bir süre Paris'te yaşadı, orada Verlaine ve öbür sembolist şairlerle tanıştı. İngiltere'ye dönünce Mutlu Prens'i (1888) yazdı. Oscar Wilde, 1884 yılında Constance Lloyd'la evlendi. Wilde, İngiltere'de estetizmin ve 'sanat sanat içindir' hareketinin başlıca temsilcisi olmuştur.
