In the "ideal" world into which Jonas was born, everybody has sensibly agreed that well-matched married couples will raise exactly two offspring, one boy and one girl. These children's adolescent sexual impulses will be stifled with specially prescribed drugs; at age 12 they will receive an appropriate career assignment, sensibly chosen by the community's Elders. This is a world in which the old live in group homes and are "released"--to great celebration--at the proper time; the few infants who do not develop according to schedule are also "released," but with no fanfare. Lowry's development of this civilization is so deft that her readers, like the community's citizens, will be easily seduced by the chimera of this ordered, pain-free society. Until the time that Jonah begins training for his job assignment--the rigorous and prestigious position of Receiver of Memory--he, too, is a complacent model citizen. But as his near-mystical training progresses, and he is weighed down and enriched with society's collective memories of a world as stimulating as it was flawed, Jonas grows increasingly aware of the hypocrisy that rules his world.

4/5 Stars (%75/100) I really liked it and I could say some parts of the book actually made me open my eyes to certain situations in my life. The book was recommended to me by the YouTube channel "Kurzgesagt" and I wanted to check it out and see if it could help me or not. I did not have any expectations as I don't really like reading

The 3rd book of the ‘Elements Series’, ‘The Silent Waters’ is the fourth book that I read from this author. And she did it again! She made me feel the joy, the pain, the hope and the fear of the characters! I truly loved this book! Maggie May is a girl who doesn’t speak and can’t leave her house due to a terrible childhood trauma. Her brother’s friend Brooks has always been a friend and then a lover for her. He is a very talented musician and he loves Maggie May as much as he loves his music. But Maggie May still tries to fight the devils in her mind every day. She can’t leave her house, how can she be the girlfriend of a famous band member? When pains of the past and fears of the future seperate them, will they find a way back to each other? Please read and find out The relationship between Brooks and Maggie May, the meaning of music and books for them was amazing! They loved each other with a love that doesn’t change or end in time. They became each other’s anchor in bad times and fought and defeated their demons haunting them. I liked Maggie May and I definitely loved Brooks!

De Profundis is not a novel or a story. It is an agonizing letter written by Oscar Wilde while he is in prison. When I found out the story of this letter, I wanted to read it right away because it was really interesting to me. Oscar Wilde, who was sentenced for 2 years, was able to hold on to life with a letter he wrote to his lover during that difficult period behind bars. Wilde, who was imprisoned for 2 years in a lousy cell for being gay, wanted to convey his feelings through this letter. This divine and flawless text was very impressive for me. I want to add some parts that impress me so much: “Now it seems to me that love of some kind is the only possible explanation of the extraordinary amount of suffering that there is in the world. I cannot conceive of any other explanation. I am convinced that there is no other, and that if the world has indeed, as I have said, been built of sorrow, it has been built by the hands of love, because in no other way could the soul of man, for whom the world was made, reach the full stature of its perfection. Pleasure for the beautiful body, but pain for the beautiful soul.” “Time and space, succession and extension, are merely accidental conditions of thought, the imagination can transcend them and move in a free sphere of ideal existences. Things also are in their essence of what we choose to make them; a thing is according to the mode in which we look at it.”

I remember my childhood when I read White Nights. Maybe it's one of the mistakes many of us make as children: to make one friend superior to another. Pretend to play with the other when one is gone and leave him alone when the other comes. In fact, two people are one and humiliate our other friend. And finally need our friend, whom we have
