"After we've filmed you screaming into the camera let's do some studying, you and I! It'll lessen the pain a little! I know, I've got just the thing. Let's study English! English!"

"Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional." “Acı kaçınılmazdır, ama acı çekmek bir seçim meselesidir (ve size bağlıdır)”anlamına gelir. Sözgelimi, koşarken, “Off!Başaramayacağım. Artık işim bitti! ” diye düşünecek olursanız, “acı” kaçınılması zor bir gerçektir, ama “işinin bitip bitmediğini” düşünmek nihayetinde kişinin kendi tasarrufundadır.

This pleasure also had to be atoned for, this pain also had to be endured, these foolish acts also had to be committed.
“We’re bound.” He pulled his shovel back from her grasp and gave her a wan, exhausted smile. “Your pain will always be mine.”
Every addiction starts with pain and ends with pain. You are using something or somebody to cover up your pain.

"What is meditation? What is leaving one's body? What is fasting? What is holding one's breath? It is fleeing from the self, it is a short escape of the agony of being a self, it is a short numbing of the senses against the pain and the pointlessness of life. The same escape, the same short numbing is what the driver of an ox-cart finds in the inn, drinking a few bowls of rice-wine or fermented coconut-milk. Then he won't feel his self any more, ther he won't feel the pains of life any more, then he finds a short numbing of the senses. When he falls asleep over his bowl of rice-wine, he'll find the same what Siddhartha and Govinda find when they escape their bodies through long exercises, staying in the non-self. This is how it is.

A capacity to feel joy must be balanced by a capacity to know pain
Our world is born of, and exists because of, duality. This is a fundament of our natural world, but it's also important to see in our own lives. The truth is that the greater capacity you have for darkness is as much contrast through which you can see light. The yin/yang of our emotional selves is always in balance; it truly just depends on what perspective we choose to view things through-both are equally available to us, the choice is always, ultimately, ours.
