4/5 Stars (%78/100) I liked The Joy Luck Club so I had high expectations for this. To be honest, this was much better than I expected and I am fairly certain I like this one more than the former. The lives of LuLing and Precious Auntie were like a myth or a legend. They both struggled a lot but finally found happiness. LuLing's life when she was young is very similar to Ruth's own life. LuLing learns the truth about Precious Auntie and her life changes for the better even though it is too late. However, it is not too late for Ruth yet. Ruth learns the truth about her own mother (just like LuLing herself) and her life also changes. This was quite similar to daughters learning to appreciate their mothers in The Joy Luck Club. Ruth is a ghostwriter in the beginning but she decides to write something with her own voice. This was a great detail in my opinion. I especially loved the story of Precious Auntie. I think this is how you should tell a story about immigration and their experience. Very interesting and successful book in my opinion.

I first read Great Expectations when I was thirteen years old. It was the first of Dickens' works that I'd read of my own volition, the only other being Oliver Twist, which we'd studied parts of in school. You know, I missed out on a lot when I was thirteen. I favoured fast-paced and gritty stories and didn't understand the love for Austen (later
