Adult women with autism are often keenly aware of how they have constructed a means of minimising discomfort while maximising invisibility and social inclusion. These women start out as ‘little psychologists’ and by adulthood can be masters at analysing social behaviour and emulating it.
There are times when I am in ‘professional’ mode and the person I am with would probably never believe I was autistic. They might think I am younger than I am or a little eccentric but otherwise perfectly ‘normal’.
