THE LOTTERY The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. I did not say anything. I was always embarrassed by the words sacred, glorious, and sacrifice and the expression in vain. We had heard them, sometimes standing in the rain almost out of earshot, so that only the shouted words came through, and had read them, on proclamations that were slapped up by billposters over other proclamations, now for a long time, and I had seen nothing sacred, and the things that were glorious had no glory and the sacrifices were like the stockyards at Chicago if nothing was done with the meat except to bury it. "I have moved out of the house of the scholars, and I slammed the door on my way out. Too long my soul sat hungry at their table; unlike them, I am not trained to approach knowledge as if cracking nuts. I love freedom and the air over fresh earth; and I would rather sleep on ox hides than on their honors and reputations. I am too hot and burned up by my own thoughts; often it steals my breath away. Just like those who stand in the street and gape at the people who pass by; thus too they wait and gape at thoughts that others have thought. When they pose as wise, I am chilled by their little proverbs and truths; often there is an odor to their wisdom, as if it came from the swamp, and truly, I have already heard the frog croaking out of it!"

We must stand up for reality, for truth. We must learn good judgement, develop our analytical skills, help our loved ones do the same, and expect the same of our leaders. We must all … well … think more scientifically. This is how we can better understand and withstand the challenges that the real world throws at us and make better decisions in our lives. This is how we can also stand up for the reality that we want for ourselves and others—a world in which we are no longer prisoners, chasing shadows in the dark, but are freer and more enlightened.
"You have a house, and a cattle, and everything; I've only what I stand up in! You have corn of your own growing; I have to buy every grain. Do what I will, I must spend three roubles every week for bread alone."
