In the late eighth century, a new product arrived in Baghdad that would transform the world of books forever,paper. In 751, the Arabs had defeated the Chinese at the Battle of Talas, in modern-day Kyrgyzstan, deep in the vast Central Asian steppe. Two of the prisoners of war who had been taken back to Samarkand passed on the secret of how to make paper from hemp and other fibrous plants.
