Sheff aslen Boston, Massachusetts'lidir. Ailesi Rus Yahudi asıllıdır. Berkeley'deki California Üniversitesi'nden mezun oldu.
Kitapları arasında Game Over, China Dawn ve All We Areing bulunuyor. Pek çok makalesi ve röportajı New York Times, Rolling Stone, Playboy, Wired, Fortune gibi yerlerde yayınlandı. New York Times Magazine için hazırladığı, My Addicted Son adlı çalışması ile Amerikan Psikoloji Derneği'nden Bağımlılığın Anlaşılmasını Geliştirmeye Olağanüstü Katkı Ödülü kazandı. Daha sonra "Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction" adlı kitabı Entertainment Weekly tarafından 2008'in en iyi kurgusal olmayan kitabı seçildi. Beautiful Boy aynı zamanda 2008'in Amazon En İyi Kitabı'ydı.
