English dictionary. These dictionaries say ‘clever’
means, ‘quick, intelligent’. These are nice adjectives but the dictionaries are all a little out of date. A modern Englishman uses the word ‘clever’ to mean ‘possibly a bit dishonest, un-English, un-Scottish, un-Welsh’.
