3/5 Stars (%56/100) It was alright. I especially studied the first chapter because I had to present it. Though I found the book long and boring (at times), I learned a few things. For instance, Thoreau romanticizes the idea of nature (like all Romantics) and in a sense blames the European settlers for destroying the land. However, Cronon argues that they are not the only ones who altered the land. Native Americans also changed the land because of survival reasons (and for other unknown reasons). Thus, the land was not virgin, it was widowed (in Francis Jennings' words). This idea was interesting and the book is one of the best sources about ecology in America. Still, it is not very interesting to me personally.
