“This isn’t the Bible, Nicholina isn’t a demon, and I’m not the son of fucking God.” She splayed her hands, facade cracking just slightly, and gestured to the sand and waves around us. “Do you see any pigs?”
Anyone could see where this was headed. Coco and Beau had danced around each other for months. Just as clear, however, was the inevitable heartbreak. Neither was in a position to start a relationship. They shared too much hurt between them. Too much grief. Jealousy. Spite. Even well-adjusted, the two would’ve been wrong for each other. Like water and oil.
“She still doesn’t like me. I thought she might after . . .”
“Do you like her?”
A second too late, she wrinkled her nose. “Of course not.”
Wake up, it snaps. You aren’t dead yet.
But I do not know this word. I do not understand death.
No one does. That’s not the point—or maybe that’s the entire point. You’re fading.
