It was also during the reigns of Ivan III and Vasilii III that additional myths of descent were developed and propagated, including that Christianity was brought to Russia by St. Andrew the Apostle, that Muscovite princes could trace their ancestry back to the Roman emperors, and that the regalia worn by the ruler had been given to the Rus princes by the Byzantine emperor himself. The doctrine of Moscow as the Third Rome served similar purposes.
