*****SPOILER ALERT*****
Each character's perspective on life is different from the other in the work. There is more than one reason why the way characters evaluate events differs from each other. Joe Keller, who comes to the fore with the role of father and remains a mystery until the end of the game, takes on life from a different and shallow perspective than the rest of the family thanks to his experiences. The main thing for Joe is his own family, and no situation that is not in the best interests of his own family is important to him. Joe Keller uses his family again to hide the mistakes he has made. With a condition called ‘suppression’ in psychology, he reveals his moral values by defending the mistakes he claims to have made for his family. According to Joe Keller's moral judgments, the family is sacred, and in any negative situation against the family, it is possible to do everything to eliminate the negative. There are also situations in which everything harms society as a whole and ignores the interests of other people.
Chris Keller, unlike his father, claims that truth and honesty are superior to everything in life, even in situations that are not in the best interests of him and his family. This does not apply to the situation of choosing a partner in the game. Chris normalizes being with Ann Deever, his older brother's fiancée, and in this case, contradicts the moral value judgments of his family. Chris has a different work ethic than his father. The situation that separates his father and Chris differs in their views on the family and society. It is possible to talk about the existence of a situation like this; individuals who exist in a family are influenced by each other and affect each other in the face of events. Although it is possible to divide situations such as work and private life into lower steps, the main thing is the attitude exhibited in the face of events. Both characters have similarities and differences from each other in this respect. It is left to the reader's interpretation to determine which character fits more into the moral judgments of society and is more innocent within the moral values they have developed themselves. Considering the perspectives of both characters on the world, the harm caused by his father to society is more to blame for being greater, the harm caused by Chris to a situation in the family is less. It is necessary to study events from a broader perspective to morally analyze the characters and evaluate them from their point of view.
Joe Keller together with his partner Steve Deever owns a factory that produces aircraft parts. A small mistake made when the aircraft factory played a critical role in the war led to the loss of dozens of lives. What was worse was that Joe Keller's other son was also on one of the planes that crashed. Morally, Joe feels responsible only to his family. He does not want such an unpleasant situation to happen in the sentences belonging to Joe in the game, but he also does not have a sincere and deep sense of sadness in the face of this situation. Because for, the main thing is money, and it doesn't make sense that the money is dirty or clean. ‘’Because it's good money, there's nothing wrong with that money." (Miller,33) Money is an important phenomenon for the family's livelihood, and although this money causes other people's unhappiness, the main thing is that family life is spent in prosperity because the family is a more sacred institution.
The family institution occupies an important place in all societies. The point of view of society as a whole can be revealed by the example of a family. Moral values and outlook on life are formed in the family. Chris has different attitudes from his family while shaping his perspective on living differently from his father. Moral values should be for the benefit of the general society, not a small group. The main purpose of moral values is also important to protect the rights of the vast majority and to succeed in honest work. Joe Keller is not responsible for an accident he caused. The mistake he made personally has caused many people in the community to be upset. Joe not only placed all the responsibility on his colleague but also caused his life to deteriorate. The main reason he showed for all this was the family. The value of the family comes from the fact that it educates useful and conscious individuals for society. The family is not a sacred institution if it causes more harm than good for society.
Joe Keller holds his family above all else and sacred. For this sacrament, he also does not neglect to keep secrets and do dark deeds. The most important reason for the sacred statuses that belong to people is that they are pure and pure. The sacrament has an important status for people when it is considered pure and bona fide. This situation loses its importance when it becomes harmful to people. Joe misses this distinction. If the family is a very important concept for Joe, it should bother him deeply to know that he caused his son's death. But Joe does not experience this feeling of discomfort, but he does not show the real face of events to other characters. Joe is not a good family man either because he is not a good person. A person who has missed the existence of the fact that there may be more important things in life than money and who puts his interests above everything else is considered dangerous.
Chris Keller is an individual who does not care about money. Since money is not important to Chris, and he is a person who grew up in good conditions, the main thing is the welfare of society. Chris adopted this idea so much that when he found out that his father was a criminal, he thought that he should be tried before the law. But he chose to walk away at the end of the game. Chris did not grow up in bad conditions, and money is worthless because he grew up in wealth. If he had been a character who felt misery as intensely as his father, he might have thought that money was more important because of the moral values he received. Chris is a character with contradictions in himself. Although he feels a great responsibility towards the general society and states the wrongness of the behavior that his father has done, this does not indicate that his moral judgments are at the highest level. In a conversation between Ann and, she can talk about her brother as if he were a stranger. ‘ Then, he is gone forever.’ (Miller, 30) Although Chris seems to attach great importance to moral value judgments, this also becomes a double standard when it comes to human life.
People living in society are responsible to each other. People influence each other because of their behavior. Chris can see this situation when he can look at it from a social point of view. But the phenomenon called society is composed of a large majority of people and many people are involved in it. Moral values and judgments affect each person. Their attitude towards his family and family members is positive and unpleasant. For this reason, Chris is a character who is morally depressed. ‘For me! Where do you live, where have you come from? For me! I was dying every day and you were killing my boys and you did it for me? What the hell do you think I was thinking of, the Goddom business? Is that as far as your mind can see, the business? What is that, the World of business? What in the hell are you? You're not even an animal, no animal kills his own, what are you? What must I do? I ought to tear the tongue out of your mouth, what must I do? What must I do Jesus God, what must I do?" (Miller,60) His reaction to his father's attitude is as follows. People who are morally in ruins can criticize others more easily. Although his attitude towards events that are accepted or may receive more reactions throughout society is more, his reaction to his family and situations that he can easily criticize is more different.
Moral criticisms and interpretations have different meanings for both characters in the work. The basis of this situation is that each character has developed a different perspective on life. The situations and events that occur cause different meanings to be extracted for each person. Although the family is the most valuable institution, in particular, it is an institution that has responsibilities towards the general society. Chris and Joe, on the other hand, show their moral judgments in different ways in the face of different events. The family is important, and honesty should not be indifferent forms at different events. Both characters show other attitudes towards their private lives and people. A person who is moral and virtuous should be in favor of honesty no matter what happens.
