The abode of the resurrected dead in the netherworld was called the ‘Field of Reeds’, and it was thought of as an unendingly fertile paradise, enjoying eternal springtime and producing regular and abundant harvests. Rich and poor alike were granted plots of land, which they were expected to cultivate. Such a prospect prompted the wealthy to equip their tombs with hundreds of figurines of labourers to do the cultivating for them, while even the poorest peasants often managed to provide themselves with one or two little clay slaves.
