Enlil, furious, decided on the total annihilation of mankind and bound all the gods by oath to co-operate in drowning all human beings in a flood. But again Ea intervened: without formally breaking his oath he contrived to warn a human servant of his, a sage called Atrahasis. This Mesopotamian Noah built a huge boat and loaded it with his family and with all kinds of animals. So this small group survived the seven days and nights of the flood. Meanwhile the gods, deprived of their customary offerings, became desperately hungry. When, at the end of the flood, Atrahasis prepared a sacrifice, they gathered round it like flies.
