Bitkilerin evrimi
Bu yeşil bitkiler, atmosferden karbondioksit ve topraktan suyu emdi ve güneşten aldıkları enerjiyi fotosentez kimyasal sürecinde kullanarak suyu ve gazı şeker gibi karbonhidrat moleküllerine ve bitkilerin organik iskeletlerini oluşturmalarını sağlayan diğer kimyasallara dönüştürdü. Bu süreçte oksijen, bir yan ürün olarak atmosfere salındı. Fotosentez süreci genel olarak aşağıdaki kimyasal denklemde özetlenebilir:

These green plants absorbed carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and water from the soil, and used energy from the Sun in the chemical process of photosynthesis to transform the water and gas into carbohydrate molecules such as sugars and other chemicals that allowed the plants to build their organic skeleton. In the process oxygen was released into the atmosphere as a by-product. The process of photosynthesis can be summarized in general terms in the following chemical equation: 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + solar energy → CH₁₂O₂ + 6O₂
