The storyteller introduces himself as an individual who discovered during his childhood that adults lack creativity and empathy. He currently serves as a pilot and has crash-landed in a desert. There, he encounters a young boy who requests a drawing of a sheep. The narrator, referring to the boy as the "little prince," fulfills the request. As their interaction unfolds, the little prince reveals that he hails from an extremely small planet, which the narrator identifies as asteroid B-612. Over the subsequent days, the little prince shares his life story with the narrator. On his diminutive asteroid-planet, scarcely larger than a house, the prince dedicates himself to uprooting baobab seedlings to prevent them from overgrowing his tiny world. Eventually, an anthropomorphic rose blossoms on the planet, captivating the prince's affection. However, the rose's vanity and demands eventually compel him to depart. The little prince's journey leads him to several other asteroids, each inhabited by an adult who has been reduced to a single function. These encounters include a king who seeks obedience, a conceited man who craves flattery, a despairing drunkard, a pedantic businessman claiming ownership of the stars, a diligent yet futile lamplighter, and an ignorant geographer who records but does not truly understand his own planet. It is the geographer who suggests that the little prince explore Earth. While on Earth, the prince meets a snake that offers to return him home and a flower that imparts insights about human nature. He discovers a rose garden but is disheartened to realize his cherished flower is not as unique as she claimed. A wise fox teaches him about the value of connection, taming, and uniqueness. After eight days in the desert, their water supply runs out. The duo embarks on a quest for a well and miraculously discovers one. The little prince confides in the narrator about his intention to reunite with his planet and his flower that night. With a poignant finality, the snake's poisonous bite will be his means of returning home. The narrative then jumps ahead six years, where the narrator reflects on the disappearance of the prince's body, expressing the hope that he has indeed returned to his planet. The story concludes with an earnest plea for anyone who encounters the little prince to contact the narrator.
