Having read it 40 years later, I found it not to be that exciting any more, probably due to the fact that there are lots of - better - books about the relationship between an abductor and abductee from different points of perspective.
Miranda, a young artist, is abducted by a man who has recently won a large amount of money in a secluded house. He is in love with her and keeps her as a prisoner with no apparent motive and obviously no chance for a response to her unrequited love. The novel moves to a tragic end and is readable, but I would not put it in the same category as the masterpiece Fowles had later written, namely French Lieutenant's Woman.
