This is a short but powerful book. It tells the story of Ndiaye, a Senegalese soldier fighting in World War I for the French army. After his best friend dies in a horrible way, Alfa starts sneaking into enemy lines at night and killing soldiers. At first, people think he’s brave. But after a while, his own army thinks he’s gone a little crazy. The story shows how war and grief can mess with someone’s mind. The writing is simple but poetic. It repeats some phrases, which makes it feel like you’re stuck in Alfa’s thoughts, just like he is. Even though it’s a small book, it talks about big things; racism, war trauma and being human. It’s dark, sad, and intense book.
