Meaning has to be understood, it cannot be measured or counted, and hence there is always an interpretive or hermeneutic elements in social science. (...) Critical realism is only partly naturalist, for although social science can use the same methods as natural science regarding causal explanation, it must also diverge from them in using ‘verstehen’ or interpretive understanding. (...) Natural science operates in a single hermeneutic while social science operates in a double hermeneutic.
