Göz ruhun penceresi olduğundan, ruh her zaman onu kaybetmekten korkar; öyle ki kişi aninden önündeki bir hareket ya da nesneden korktuğunda ne elleriyle yaşamın kaynağı olan kalbini korur, ne tüm duyuların hükümdarının bulunduğu yer olan kafasını korur, ne de duyduğu, koku ve tat aldığı organlarını korur. Fakat korktuğu ilk anda, göz kapaklarını kapatmadan edemez. Tüm gücüyle sıkıca kapalı tutar, [...] ve kendini hala güvende hissetmediğinden gözlerini eliyle kapatır [...]
