This is what we called, earlier, the intentional model of representation. But according to Saussure's schema, each authored statement only becomes possible because the ·author' shares with other language-users the common rules and codes of the language system- the langue- which allows them to communicate with each other meaningfully. The author decides what she wants to say. But she cannot 'decide' whether or not to use the rules of language, if she wants to be understood.
