Circe, Madeline Miller Circe explores the story of the daughter of Helios, Titan, and the god of the sun. The witch-goddess is likely best known for her role in Odysseus' story as the sorceress who lives alone on an island and turns men to pigs. Madeline says that she was impressed by Circe while reading Odysses in her 13 but he never asked why she turned men into pigs. Madeline says that, she wanted to be the voice of woman in mythology, to show the pressure and how the were abused by gods, society. Author says, humanity and empathy are the most powerful tools which ancient greek gods do not have. Circe is also the voice of humanity who speaks for humans. She takes the snippets that have been told of Circe and creates a multi-dimensional character who has the flaws of mortals and abilities of the gods. “It is a common saying that women are delicate creatures, flowers, eggs, anything that may be crushed in a moment's carelessness. If I had ever believed it, I no longer did.” “That is one thing gods and mortals share. When we are young, we think ourselves the first to have each feeling in the world.” “But perhaps no parent can truly see their child. When we look we see only the mirror of our own faults.”
