The story follows a 50-year-old architecture professor, Asterios Polyp, who begins to redirect his life and revisit his past after his house burns down. I bought this book because it was said to be one of the greatest graphic novels ever made—and I’m so glad I did. Reading Asterios Polyp was a profound experience. Mazzucchelli did an incredibly detailed and thoughtful job—with character-based designs, expressive linework, and colors that perfectly reflect each personality. Mazzucchelli’s delicate attention to human emotion and contradiction reminded me of how consciousness itself is built layer by layer. Sometimes I wonder whether the depth of my own consciousness is a blessing or a curse because it often causes me to suffer. But a book like this comes along, then I see the beauty created by the depth of consciousness and feel quietly grateful for being able to sense it. I’ve already read this book twice, but I’d love to read it again—and think even deeper about it.
