Musashino Sanat Üniversitesi'nden mezun oldu. 1977'de yurtdışında okurken "Chotto Fushigi na Geshukunin" (ちょっと不思議な下宿人, "A Slightly Strange Neighbor") adlı kısa hikayesi ile ilk çıkışını yaptı. 1970'lerde Amerikan gençlik heykelini tasvir eden "California" hikayesiyle popülerlik kazandı. Yoshida, 2018'de MAPPA tarafından üretilen bir anime uyarlaması alan suç gerilim dizisi Banana Fish ile geniş bir hayran kitlesi kazandı.
