I was a child in those days, and a bit of a goof. But the world was gentler then and allowed us to be that way.
Our word for ‘freedom’—jiyusei—was coined as a translation of the German Freiheit. But it’s said that the Japanese word was originally used in a strictly political sense and may not be an exact equivalent. Freiheit is a simple concept that means ‘not enslaved,’ ‘not subject to restraint.’
