Yoshimoto, 24 Temmuz 1964'te Tokyo'da doğdu ve liberal bir ailede büyüdü. Babası şair ve eleştirmen Takaaki Yoshimoto, kız kardeşi Haruno Yoiko ise Japonya'da tanınmış bir karikatürist.
Yoshimoto, Nihon Üniversitesi Sanat Koleji'nden edebiyat bölümünden mezun oldu.
Asıl adı Mahoko Yoshimoto olan Banana Yoshimoto, oldukça ünlü çağdaş Japon yazarlarından biridir. Hem çok şirin bulduğundan, hem de muz çiçeklerini çok sevdiğinden dolayı Banana ismini kullanmaktadır.
Yoshimoto, yazarlık kariyerine 1987 yılında bir golf kulübü restoranında garson olarak çalışırken başladı. Amerikalı yazar Stephen King'i ilk büyük etkilerinden biri olarak seçti ve onun korku dışı hikayelerinden ilham aldı. İlham aldığı diğer yazarlar arasında Truman Capote ve Isaac Bashevis Singer gibi yazarlar bulunmaktadır.
Yazarın Türkçeye çevrilen kitapları arasında Mutfak ve Elveda Tsugumi kitapları yer almaktadır.
