"I know," Aoife continued to whisper as she touched him and petted him like he was a small child. "You're in there, aren't you? Hmm?" She pressed a kiss to the corner of his mouth. "I see you, Joey Lynch." She stroked her nose against his and whispered, "You can't hide from me."

"Listen up," Johnny said then, drawing the attention of his friends. "This is Shannon – my girlfriend. She's going to be sitting here from now on, so get used to seeing her around the place." He moved to sit down, but quickly stopped himself and straightened back up. "Oh, and fuck with her and I'll bury you all –" He cast a meaningful look around the table before adding, "Are we clear?"
"I don’t want to feel this way anymore," she told me, wiping her cheek with the back of her hand. "I don't want this version of life – I don’t want to be this version of me."
"I love this version of you," I told her, unsure of what else there was to say. I couldn't tell her not to feel the way she did. All I could do was reassure her. "I love all your versions."
Johnny? If you're going to let me down –" dropping my head, I closed my eyes and inhaled several shaky breaths before tipping my chin up and opening my eyes, "then I need you to do it now, okay? Don’t wait until it's too late, and please… please don’t make it hurt –"
"I won't," Johnny whispered, brows touching, lips gliding against mine as he spoke. "I'll always be careful with you, Shannon like the river. I promise."
Dangling Shannon's bra from her fingers, Mam arched a brow. "Care to explain?"
"Would you believe me if I told you that was mine?"

"Listen. I need you to take care of yourself, okay? I need you to do that for me." Clutching the back of my head, he stepped forward and pressed a kiss to my forehead. "Don’t depend on her, or Darren, or anyone else, because in the end, the world will let you down. They will all let you down."
"And you?" I choked out, tears flowing freely down my cheeks now. "Does that include you?"
"Especially me," he strangled out before brushing past me and moving for the stairs.
"You are not your father's daughter, and there's no orchard in the world far enough from the tree your apple fell from." His arms tightened around me, the heat from his body cocooning me. "He won't break you, because I won't let that happen. Not ever."
"Shannon Lynch?" I called out, ignoring the rest of her fucked up family. "I love you back."
Sniffling, she lifted her chin from Joey's chest and looked at me all red-eyed and blotchy. "S-still?" "Still." I nodded in confirmation. "Like a crazy fucking amount."
"Don't do that to me, Shannon – don't block me out. Don't give me you last weekend and then take it away again. I'm the same me from that night in my house – I'm the same me from every other time we've been together. So, don't put a wall up between us, not when you've already let me climb over it."
"I'm…I didn't realize I was doing that," I admitted. "You're doing it now," he confirmed gruffly. "You do it all the time."
