First, who are the best-known and most influential researchers in your research area? Since these are the people everybody else knows about, it is important for you to know who they are and what research they have done that is considered so important.
Second, but by no means less important, who else is doing similar research to you? Or put another way, who is your direct competition?
The key to creative problem-solving is to think beyond the first thing that comes to mind and to consider alternative options.
